We all know managing, and limiting, stress is very important to health and in general, but what does it have to do with longevity? How do you manage stress? What is stress?
Stress
Chronic stress can limit one's lifespan and speed up the aging process, which is something most of us want to avoid.
Stress can be defined as "A consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time... Symptoms include aches and pains, insomnia or weakness, less socialization, unfocused thinking, increased alcohol or drug use, and emotional withdrawal" (Yale Medicine).
How to manage stress
There are many different ways to manage stress, but here are the most effective ones.
- Exercise
- Eating healthy foods
- Learning time management
- Setting realistic goals for yourself
- Getting the right amount of sleep
- Making time for leisure activities
- Learning and practicing mindfulness
- Meditation- learning to control your attention
Stress & Longevity
A study performed by the Finnish National FINRISK Study and published by the journal BMJ Open made remarkable findings of the affects of stress on life expectancy.
The study found that for men heavy/chronic stress shortened their life expectancy by 2.8 years and for woman it shortened their life expectancy by 2.3 years.
