Yellowstone Kayak Tour; at Yellowstone Lake West Thumb

What is Yellowstone?

Yellowstone was the first National Park to be established on March 1, 1872, by Ulysses S. Grant and is 2,219,790.71 acres making it the 8th largest National Park in the United States. It has many different geological features to view like hot springs, geysers, canyons (how it got its name), lakes, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls with lots of wildlife as well. When/if you visit you will get to see buffalo, mountain goats, elk, antelope, black bears, and grizzly bears!

Yellowstone Lake; West Thumb

Yellowstone
Yellowstone Lake is the largest lake in the National Park covering 136 square miles and a greatest depth of 394 feet. The West Thumb Geyser Basin right on Yellowstone Lake is a unique way to look at the Geysers. I would recommend getting a view of this area from the board walks on land and from the water so that you are able to see the whole basin.

Kayaking Tour on Yellowstone Lake West Thumb

I visited Yellowstone in June 2021 and fell in love with it! While there and visiting Yellowstone Lake and the West Thumb Geyser Basin I did a guided kayak tour on the lake which allowed me to learn a lot about the lake, west thumb, and Yellowstone as a whole. The tour was great, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting and looking for a fun activity to do while there. The tour was 4 hours long and we kayaked for 3 hours and went a total of 4 miles along the west thumb and got to take our time taking in the views of the lake and basin and ask any questions we had about Yellowstone.

What Went Wrong

Although my guided tour was great and I was able to learn so much and enjoy kayaking while doing it, it had a very rocky start. This tour was booked online on a third-party website and when we first arrived at the docks, where all kayaking tours launch from in the West Thumb, our tour guide was no where to be found. We called him at least 20 times and got to answer, so we started to think we had gotten scammed. But, luckily after an hour of waiting and about to leave he showed up! The delay was due to it being his first ever tour and he had to get stickers for the kayaks.
